History
The existence of the Gasthof zur Post strucutre was first mentioned in 1280 and it has played an important role as a tavern and resting point for travelers since that time. It was once a relay stop on the "coach post trail" between Munich and Vienna, and it served as a lodge for baronial pilgrims, cardinals, bishops, archdukes, and kings.
In 1630, a fire in the stables caused the structure to burn down, along with seven neighboring buildings on the estate. In 1648, rebuilding was completed.
Between 1685 and 1688, it was completely transformed into Italian baroque style by the famous architect, Domenico Zucalli (Nymphenburg castle in Munich). An Italian-style "pleasure garden" was created and the stables were also enlarged.
Since 1830, the building has been a single/private property and has been operated under the name of "Gasthof zur Post". The hotel has been in the hands of the Tandler family since 1976. Their extensive restoration work has transformed the hotel into a jewel on Altötting's Kapellplatz, in the heart of Bavaria.
